At the Nikkei Centre's event Jan. 4, you can write your resolutions in Japanese characters using brush and ink.

As 2024 draws to a close, it’s time to plan how to ring in the new year, and what could be more fun than a day of activities at a local museum and cultural centre?

Join the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre on Jan. 4 for a celebration of the Japanese New Year, with games, food trucks and more.

Free activities will include Kakizome New Year calligraphy where you can write your New Year’s resolutions in Japanese characters using brush and ink.

“Kakizome, meaning 'first writing' in Japanese, symbolizes the auspicious beginning of the year,” states the event webpage. “Take this opportunity to inscribe your aspirations and intentions for the coming year. Materials, examples, and guidance will be provided to ensure an enriching and enjoyable experience.”

You can also play classic Japanese board games, including Shogi, Igo, Karuta and Gaji/Hanafuda. Kid-friendly board games will also be provided.

A loose leaf tea open house will feature different Japanese teas from 1 to 3 p.m., and a Hawaiian Hula dance class for beginners aged 18 and up will be held from 2 to 3 p.m.

Food and drink vendors will include Cakebox, Tatchan Noodle, Japadog and Japan Rice Bowl Association.

For more information, see the Nikkei Centre’s website.
