Cops issue a whopping 104 speeding tickets in 1 shift - and yes, 'N' drivers too

It appears more local drivers are eager to get from point 'A' to point 'B' as summer continues. However, some may have been a little too overzealous with the gas pedal recently.

Burnaby RCMP had this impaired driver's vehicle towed away.

It appears more local drivers are eager to get from point 'A' to point 'B' as summer continues.

However, some may have been a little too overzealous with the gas pedal recently.

In one shift on June 22, RCMP said its traffic team issued a total of 104 violation tickets, most of which were for speeding in lower designated zone limits.

Const. Deanna Law said officers were stationed in several neighbourhoods.

Though nothing unusual was dealt with during their shift, she explains these Coquitlam-area Mounties caught drivers speeding in a playground zone, speeding in a construction zone and speeding in general areas.

According to ICBC, general speeding fines can range between $138 and $483. Speeding through a playground zone results in a $196 to $253 fine.

Law says other violations among the 104 tickets included:

  • Failing to display a licence plate(s)
    • A $230 fine, per ICBC
  • Failing to obey a traffic control device
    • A $121 fine, per ICBC
  • Failing to display an 'N'
    • A $109 fine, per ICBC

Meanwhile, Burnaby RCMP have been catching impaired drivers at night (see the photo above) and are taking part in a different kind of traffic enforcement project.

The Burnaby RCMP, along with 14 Lower Mainland agencies, have come together to ensure road safety and Commercial Vehicle safety is a priority in the Lower Mainland.

These agencies include:

  • Burnaby RCMP
  • Delta Police Commercial Vehicle Unit
  • New Westminster Police Commercial Vehicle Unit
  • Port Moody Police
  • Metro Vancouver Transit Police Traffic Enforcement Team
  • Coquitlam RCMP
  • Abbotsford Police
  • Ridge Meadows RCMP
  • Upper Fraser Valley RCMP
  • City of Surrey Bylaws Commercial Vehicle Enforcement team
  • City of Coquitlam Bylaws Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Team
  • City of Burnaby Bylaws
  • Passenger Transportation Branch
  • Vancouver Police Dept Traffic
  • BC Highway Patrol

This group’s priorities are to:

  • Ensure all inspected commercial vehicles are safe to be on the roadway
  • Educate drivers on the rules and regulations surrounding commercial vehicles
  • Enforce serious safety violations

Stats from January 1 to June 15:

  • 859 Inspections
  • 487 (57%) Trucks placed out of service/removed from the roadway (contained at least 1 critical safety violation that required the commercial motor vehicle’s immediate removal from the roadway until such a time as the critical safety violation was corrected)
  • 1,332 Violations identified (each violation represented a ticket worthy offence)
  • 1,000 Mechanical defects identified

Officers also came upon the following infractions during these inspections:

  • 1-90 Day IRP (Immediate Roadside Prohibition)
  • 1-24 hour driving prohibition for alcohol
  • 2 Excessive speeding infractions
  • 1 Prohibited driver (charges forwarded)
  • 1 Indefinite driving prohibition issued with a 7 day vehicle impoundment
  • 1 Weapon seizure
  • 1 Stolen val tag

Prior to entering the roadway each day, every commercial vehicle must have a pre-trip inspection conducted on it, which falls under S. 37.22 of the MVAR.

“Commercial vehicles are essential in many aspects of our day to day lives,” says Corporal Mike Kalanj of the Burnaby RCMP. “Along with our partners, we recognize that commercial motor vehicle enforcement is also essential in order to keep all motorists safe.”
