COVID-19 outbreak declaration lifted at Burnaby's George Derby Centre, three deaths recorded

A COVID-19 outbreak that claimed three lives at Burnaby's George Derby Centre has officially been lifted. 

Fraser Health says thanks to the following of implementation of comprehensive strategies to prevent and respond to COVID-19 in long-term care and assisted living facilities, there are now no cases at the facility. 

According to the Weekly COVID-19 Long Term Care, Assisted Living and Independent Living Outbreak Report for Feb. 9, 2022, three resident deaths were recorded at the facility among 52 cases. 

Twenty-four of the 52 cases involve residents. The remaining 28 are among staff. 

Fraser Health said they proactively implemented the following measures at the site: 

  • Staffing levels are being supported to maintain resident care
  • Social visits are restricted in the affected areas of the facility. Essential visits can continue
  • Staff and residents movement in the affected areas of the facility has been modified to minimize exposure to others
  • Cleaning and infection control measures have been further enhanced
  • Residents, families and staff are being notified
  • Twice a day screening of all staff and residents is taking place
  • Additional testing and screening is in place to support monitoring of disease control

George Derby Centre was subject to an outbreak on Nov. 8, 2021, when there were 10 confirmed cases. 

The outbreak included 24 cases involving 16 residents and eight staff members. One death was also recorded. 

In November of 2020, the centre endured a tragic outbreak with 36 lives lost among 109 confirmed infections.
