Progress on the new Edmonds pool and community centre has fallen behind again, with an expected completion date for a "substantial" amount of the project now set for February.
The delay was due to weather conditions in June, which prevented the contractor from finishing the roofing on schedule, according to a report from the city's major civic building project coordination committee.
The adjustment set the schedule back about four weeks, the report stated, but the project is still on budget.
The centre was about 75 per cent completed as of Oct. 16.
Last February, Dave Ellenwood, the director of the city's parks, recreation and cultural services department, said the project's completion date was pushed back to December from the previous estimate of mid-November.
"We're hoping they can make up the time, and they're always looking to do that," he said at the time. "Our foremost concern is the quality, and if things like this weather hold them up, we don't want them to cut corners, we want them to just carry on with the schedule."
The opening date for the centre will probably be four to six weeks after the completion date, Ellenwood said. Once construction is finished, the city needs to have the centre inspected
which takes about two weeks, he added.
"When we find - and we always find some deficiencies - we have to make sure the contractor corrects those before we take the building under our possession," Ellenwood said.
Ellenwood could not be reached for an interview before press time.
Most of the exterior of the building had been completed by the time the report was submitted last month, with some work continuing to the end of October.
The contractor has also been working on tiling the pool tanks. Deck tiles are expected to be installed early this month, according to the report, and tiling in the change room was set to begin at the end of October.
Mechanical and electrical work is ongoing, the report added.
Plans for the pool area include a six-lane, 25-metre pool, a leisure pool, warm swim and therapy lanes, a lazy river with two channels, and double water-
slides, according to a press release from the centre's architect, CEI Architecture.
There will also be a 12,000-squarefoot twin gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, child-minding spaces, spaces for seniors and youth, art rooms, a fitness studio, a fitness centre and a central atrium social space, the release added.
The centre is being built to LEED silver certification environmentally sustainable building standards. The cost for the new centre was estimated at about $30 million.
