The Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table project group spoke to city council on Monday night regarding its work connecting newcomers with their community.

The group asked Mayor Derek Corrigan to declare Feb. 8 Embracing Cultural Diversity Day in Burnaby, which he did.

The group included Jeanne Fike, executive director of Burnaby Family Life and Chris Friesen, director of settlement services for the Immigrant Services Society of B.C. - co-chairs of the table group - and Raj Sharma, chair of the Burnaby Board of Trade's immigration integration subcommittee, and Antonia Beck, executive director of South Burnaby Neighbourhood House.

The group answered questions about some of the challenges newcomers face and the work the table does to make Burnaby more inclusive and welcoming, including working with the city and the school board.

Last year, the table received the first Welcome B.C. Award from the B.C. government for its work, the group stated in a letter to council.
