Burnaby firefighters snuffed out a fire at a homeless camp Wednesday night before it could spread to nearby brush and trees rendered tinder dry by recent hot weather.
Crews were called to the 8800 block of North Fraser Way near Marine Way at about 10:30 p.m. for reports of a structure fire, according to Burnaby Fire Department assistant fire Chief Graham Lamont.
When firefighters arrived, they found a makeshift wooden structure in a nearby green space on fire.
Crews knocked down the blaze, and there were no injuries, according to Lamont.
“It didn’t spread to the forest at all, just that structure, so quite fortunate,” he said. “It is something we have to be very concerned about because things, as we know, can spread pretty quick.”
