Wondering what to do in Burnaby this long weekend? There's lots going on the city to make the most out of.

Here's a list:

Nikkei Matsuri

Soak in Japanese culture, including a samurai show, at the Nikkei National Museum in Burnaby over the long weekend.

The Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre (NNMCC) will be hosting its 11th annual Nikkei Matsuri festival on Saturday, Sept. 2 and Sunday, Sept. 3.

The family-friendly festival — the largest celebration of Japanese culture, according to its website — will give a chance for everyone to come together and immersive themselves in the richness of Japanese culture.

  • Where: Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre (6688 Southoaks Cres.)
  • When: Sept. 1 to 3; Friday, Sept. 1, 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Cost: $8 in advance; $10 at the door (Free for guests between 6 to 7 p.m.)

Free for NNMCC members, children and youth 17 years old and younger, and seniors over 65.

 

North Road festival

Celebrate culture and community at the City of Lougheed shopping centre on Saturday, Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Explore a variety of cultural activities, performances, and a bustling marketplace at the first-ever North Road Festival hosted by Burnaby North Road Business Improvement Association.

North Road is the largest Korean shopping district in Lower Mainland, so expect the free festival to be filled with cultural performances, food trucks and more.

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Where: The City of Lougheed shopping centre (entrance via North Road or Austin Avenue)

Paint and coffee

Unleash your inner artist this Sunday, Sept. 3, with a "paint and coffee" session at Fondway cafe.

The three-hour session will guide people of all skill levels — from beginners to experience — to explore the world of art and bring home a canvas masterpiece to display with pride.

Although aprons will be provided for everyone, attendees are requested to bring their own materials including acrylic paint, paint brushes and canvas. The tickets are priced at $25 per person, and materials will be provided with an additional "I need materials" ticket for $12.

Metro Vancouver Labour Day celebration

The New Westminster & District and Vancouver & District labour councils are jointly hosting a free, family-friendly Metro Vancouver Labour Day celebration this year at Edmonds Park.

On Monday, Sept. 4, the Labour Day celebrations will highlight the workers with the theme "Canada's Unions: Lifting Everyone Up."

Starting at 11:30 a.m. with speeches, until 2:30 p.m., the Metro Vancouver labour day celebrations is slated to have all the fun elements — including games, bouncy castles for kids, entertainment, live music, food and more.

Labour Day at Burnaby Village Museum

Celebrate Labour Day with a history walk at Burnaby Village Museum. Walk through the displays, activities, entertainment and explore labour history from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 4.

Throughout the day, learn the history and legacy of Burnaby's South Asian Canadian community in this interactive exhibit, embark on a labour scavenger hunt, watch a working people documentary or watch Pacific Spirit Quilters' Guild members showcase their talents.
