Health officials have confirmed how many cases have been recorded amid an ongoing outbreak at a Burnaby long-term care facility.
According to the BC Centre for Disease Control's (BCCDC) weekly long-term care report, 40 infections have been detected at George Derby Centre as of Wednesday (April 20) since an outbreak declaration was put in place on April 11, 2022.
Fraser Health says a COVID-19 outbreak may be declared at a long-term care or assisted living site at the direction of the medical health officer or their official designate.
"Based on the consideration of multiple risk factors, including vaccination coverage rate among residents, the severity of illness amongst cases and the rate of increase in cases, a unit/wing/floor/facility may be placed on outbreak under the direction of the medical health officer, working with the facility leadership and health authority long-term care program, and infection, prevention and control teams," the authority says on its website.
George Derby Centre has been subject to multiple outbreaks since the start of the pandemic, with the last being declared on Jan. 4 and ending on Feb. 17.
A total of three lives were lost among 52 recorded cases.
In November 2020, the centre endured another tragic outbreak with 36 lives lost among 109 confirmed infections.
