Amid a political storm on Parliament Hill, Burnaby South MP and fedeal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has called on Justin Trudeau to resign.

In a stunning move early Monday morning, Dec. 16, Chrystia Freeland, now former minister of finance and deputy premier, announced she was leaving Trudeau's cabinet amid disagreements with the prime minister.

In a letter posted to her X account, Freeland revealed Trudeau had told her he did not want her to serve as finance minister any longer and apparently offered her another position in his cabinet.

"For the past number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada," she wrote, citing president-elect Donald Trump's threats of 25 per cent tariffs, eschewing costly political gimmicks and working with Premiers of provinces.

"I will always be grateful for the chance to have served in government and I will always be proud of our government's work for Canada and Canadians.

"I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues as a Liberal Member of Parliament."

Freeland ended her letter by confirming she will seek re-election again for her seat in Toronto (University—Rosedale) in the next federal election.

At a news conference later, Singh called out Trudeau and the Liberals for fighting amongst themselves, calling on Trudeau to immediately resign.

"Right now, Canadians are struggling with the cost of living," the Burnaby MP told reporters in Ottawa.

"I hear it everywhere I go. They can't find a home they can afford; can't buy their groceries. And on top of that, we have [president-elect] Trump threatening tariffs of 25 per cent which [would] put hundreds and thousands of Canadian jobs at risk.

"Instead of focusing on these issues, Justin Trudeau and the Liberals are focused on themselves. They're fighting themselves instead of fighting for Canadians.

"For that reason, I'm calling on Trudeau to resign. He has to go."

Trudeau has yet to comment on Freeland's resignation or calls for his resignation.
