Nine cities, nine concerts, 12 hours — a B.C. acoustic-pop duo band just created a new world record.
On Saturday, July 8, Jon Fennell and Kevin Roy of Kamloops-based band Loops broke the Guinness world record for most concerts played in different cities in a span of just 12 hours — all for a good cause.
Appearing at a Ford dealership in Burnaby, the duo delivered a live concert in their attempt to break the previous record of eight concerts in a 12-hour period. The stop was about halfway through their marathon day of performing in pursuit of the world record.
The world record was broken — "with 23 minutes to spare," according to Roy — all while raising money and awareness for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
The series of live concerts kicked off at 10 a.m. in Squamish before the band made its way across Lower Mainland, stopping at Vancouver, Abbotsford before reaching Burnaby. The celebrations culminated at Poseidon Restaurant and Bar in Langley with the new record set.
Roy noted that the donations are still coming in from the different locations and the public; so the fundraiser will be kept open for the next couple of weeks. "The more [money] we raise, the better," Roy told the NOW.
The inspiration for this world record came from Roy’s personal experience.
"My younger brother was hospitalized much of his life until he passed away at six years old and my nieces are both teenagers with cystic fibrosis. Through this lens, both myself and Jon have seen the incredible work done by the BC Children's Hospital and thought this was a great way for us to give back to them.”
Now, with the record broken, the singers will be submitting their evidence of achievement to Guinness World Record, so they can be officially recognized for the achievement. The turnaround time for this, Roy said, is 12 to 16 weeks.
For now, those who want to donate to the cause can still do so on their fundraising page.
