The Burnaby School District announced early Monday morning that the public schools will still be open today, despite heavy snowfall Sunday and through the night.
But a news release posted on the school district’s website this morning is leaving attendance in the hands of parents.
“The decision to send your child to school or not is ultimately a family one,” it reads. “If for any reason you feel that your student cannot travel safely to school then please – as you normally would – notify the school that your child will be absent.”
The snow is combined with sub-zero temperatures to make for icy road conditions Monday morning and the Burnaby RCMP is advising drivers to take great caution.
“We want to remind drivers to adjust their speeds accordingly and leave extra room between them and the vehicle in front as stopping distances will be affected as the snow begins accumulating on the roadway,” read a tweet from the Burnaby RCMP.
