April 15 will mark the one-year anniversary when a group of Burnaby hotel workers lost their jobs.
Leading up to it, the workers got a boost from Burnaby South MP and federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who joined them in a protest on Monday outside of the Hilton Metrotown hotel.
“Together we send a message to the hotel - one day longer, one day stronger,” read a tweet by the workers, represented by UNITE HERE Local 40.
During the pandemic, Hilton Metrotown management terminated 97 long-term staff, and locked out the rest on April 15, 2021 – a move the union has called “mass firings.” Workers have been on the picket line for nearly a year.
The B.C. Federation of Labour has endorsed a boycott of Hilton Vancouver Metrotown. The City of Burnaby also announced that it would not be doing any business with the hotel due to the lockout.
