Jiu-jitsu for a cause

Here's a fundraiser with a twist - or a toss, I should say. A group of BCIT jiu-jitsu students are tossing folks around to raise money for the Kids Help Phone this Saturday at Brentwood Town Centre.

Here's a fundraiser with a twist - or a toss, I should say. A group of BCIT jiu-jitsu students are tossing folks around to raise money for the Kids Help Phone this Saturday at Brentwood Town Centre.

The jiu-jitsu club will be demonstrating a variety of martial arts moves for an hour, and onlookers can donate to the cause. Find them in the atrium outside of London Drugs on the second floor between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. There will also be a raffle with Canucks tickets as one of the prizes.

The group is holding the fundraiser as a stand against bullying. For more, go to www.jitsuvancouver. com/takeastand.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students. For information or tickets, call 604-568-7001 or 6044449250.

The March 7 show is at 12: 30 p.m. The March 8 and 9 shows are at 7 p.m.

HONORARY DEGREE

BCIT awarded First Nations activist Shawn Ain-chut Atleo an honorary technology degree at the institute's convocation ceremonies in February.

Atleo is a hereditary chief from the Ahousaht First Nation on Vancouver Island. He is also national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, and he helped create the historic Leadership Accord between First Nations stakeholders in B.C.

The honorary BCIT degree is for people who have made outstanding achievements in their areas of expertise. Atleo was chosen for his principled commitment to working collaboratively, through inclusion and respect, and focusing on education with the Assembly of First Nations.

"I am honoured to be part of the celebration of accomplishments of this year's graduates," Atleo said. "Education is key to unlocking potential, and BCIT's efforts in making education more accessible to First Nation students helps build on our broad efforts in supporting education opportunities for First Nations."

JAN KEN PON!

Mark your calendar for the upcoming Family Fun Day at Nikkei Place on Saturday, March 17. Family Fun Day - or Jan Ken Pon! - is a day full of Japanese heritage games and fun activities for kids, aged four to 12.

The highlight of the day, we're told, is the rockpaper-scissors tournament. There will also be spinning tops, beanbags, crafts, and heritage toys on display.

Tickets are $5 for kids, or $4 if you register before March 10. Accompanying adults get in for free.

See www.nikkeiplace. org or call 604-777-7000.
