KidSport Burnaby is urgently in need of donations.

A provincial volunteer organization is issuing a plea for donations for its Burnaby chapter as demand is at an all-time high and without more donations, the program could be in jeopardy.

KidSport Burnaby saw a record year for grants during 2024, surpassing the 2023 grant distribution total before the end of the year.

From 2022 to 2023, the local branch funded 44 per cent more applications while increasing funding distribution from $38,128 to $66,000.

As of this month, more than $98,000 in grants has funded sports for 310 kids this year.

“We are proud that the KidSport Burnaby chapter been able to support more kids than ever before to participate in a season of sport, but the increased demand is putting a significant strain on their funding resources,” KidSport BC director Angela Crowther said in a news release.

“Donations are urgently needed for the chapter to continue their granting program. Without donor support, they may need to restrict grant distributions or look at pausing their program as fundraising efforts just haven’t been able to keep up with the growing demand in that community.”

The organization says the challenges are not restricted to Burnaby, with other chapters throughout B.C. experiencing high numbers of grant applications, citing the cost of living and interest rates which could limit parents from enroling kids in sports.

“Sport is so much more than just the wins and losses of the game,” Crowther added.

“Your donation to KidSport helps provide important opportunities for kids to build friendships, gain confidence, and create positive community connections that help fuel their potential. You can have a significant impact on a child’s life for a relatively small investment.”

KidSport Burnaby provides $400 per child per year to cover the cost of sport registration fees.

Since 2019, it's helped 2,630 Burnaby kids with more than $535,000 provided in funding.
