Letter: City or RCMP? Here's who I think should resolve Burnaby traffic issues

This letter writer believes there's been was no consideration for pedestrians around The Amazing Brentwood.

The Editor:

If you live around Brentwood Mall, you are likely aware of the issues with traffic and the lack of consideration for pedestrians using crosswalks.

I have had several close calls with drivers who fail to yield at intersections and block crosswalks.

Several weeks ago, I witnessed a confrontation between a driver and a taxi, bringing traffic to a standstill as the cab driver exited his vehicle to confront the other driver.

I reached out to the Mayor's office and the City of Burnaby's Engineering Department. They responded promptly, but when I raised my concerns about pedestrian safety and the near-misses I've experienced, they explained that this was not within their jurisdiction.

They stated that it is an RCMP matter, and while they will review my concerns, it is not the city's responsibility.

Short of stationing an RCMP constable at every intersection on Lougheed from Boundary to Delta, I don't see how they can resolve the traffic issues created by the city.

Mr. Mayor, as a former firefighter, will you act only after people are seriously injured or killed?

It's time to address the traffic and safety concerns of those who live here and pay their taxes.
