Letter: I deserve safer sidewalks to-and-from my Burnaby home

This letter writer believes, among all the construction, Burnaby residents should advocate for walkable neighbourhoods.

The Editor:

I was walking back the night of Dec. 6, 2024, from Willington Avenue to Silver Avenue where I live

I am a senior and still fairly mobile, but found the sidewalks in this area in very bad shape due to the ongoing construction.

There was water pooling everywhere as it was pouring rain and, at time, no sidewalk as rental buildings were fenced off and I had to walk on the road.

There is very poor street lighting in this area now.

This was a very walkable area before all the construction started and I think us renters deserve a safe sidewalk, especially in fall and winter when the sun sets at 4:15 p.m.

I still work part-time and do pay taxes, so am I not entitled to a basic safe sidewalk from my home?

My request to mayor and Burnaby city hall is to please do something to improve walkability in this area.

The condos are unaffordable for us, the owners all use their cars to move around and the traffic in this area has increased considerably.
