A 29-year-old man was arrested Friday night after allegedly stealing an SUV, hitting the owner with the vehicle, and later colliding with two police vehicles trying to stop him.

Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of a stolen vehicle near Patterson Avenue and Victory Street just after 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

The suspect had fled the area in the SUV, leaving the owner with minor injuries, Kalanj said in an emailed statement.

Several officers patrolling the area located the SUV near Joffre Avenue and Clinton Street near the Burnaby-Vancouver border.

While attempting to flee again, the suspect collided with two police vehicles and several parked cars before being arrested, Kalanj said.

Police took the man to the hospital to get checked out before transporting him to the Burnaby RCMP cells.

The suspect, who was breaching numerous court-ordered conditions relating to vehicle thefts at the time, now faces further charges of assault with a weapon, assaulting a police officer, car theft, mischief over $5,000 and breach of probation.
