Police in Burnaby have arrested a man after a stand-off this afternoon that led to the lockdown of two nearby elementary schools.

"The situation is concluding," said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk shortly before 3 p.m after police were able to take the man into custody.

Police were planning to check the house for weapons and then call off the lockdown.

The incident began shortly before noon when police received a call about a man in his early 20s, distressed, possibly armed and barricaded in his home in the 1600 block of Delta Avenue.

The integrated emergency response team responded and attempted to make contact with the man. Nearby Brentwood Park Elementary and Holy Cross Elementary were locked down.

At the time, Gresiuk told the NOW that the schools were closed as a "precautionary measure."

Parents arriving to pick up their children from Brentwood this afternoon were turned away at a police barricade and instructed to park at a nearby mall and walk back in; children at Holy Cross were able to be picked up from outside the barricade.

Residents of the neighbourhood were also being kept behind the barricade as they arrived until the situation was resolved.

Earlier in the afternoon, police were attempting to make contact with the man.

"It's what you do in these types of situations," said Gresiuk.
