Burnaby Mountain on Dec. 30, 2021.

It was more than just a little dusting.

Burnaby, as well as Metro Vancouver residents, woke up to a massive snowfall thanks to another winter storm that moved through yesterday evening (Dec. 29) to this morning (Dec. 30).

Lakes and ponds are not open for skating: city

The City of Burnaby is reminding residents that all lakes and ponds are not open for outdoor skating due to unsafe conditions.

The city says Burnaby's lakes are fed by streams that are moving water, creating unstable ice conditions.

Winter weather can give a false sense of safety about ice conditions and rarely creates outdoor skating conditions, putting outdoor enthusiasts at risk.

Warning signs have been posted at the most popular sites at Deer Lake and Burnaby Lake to inform people about the danger.

Other city amenities affected

Snow removal efforts will continue throughout the day in the priority order

Crews are also clearing pedestrian infrastructure (bus stops, wheelchair ramps, parking lots etc.)

Single-family recycling and green waste collection in Zone 3 is suspended.

TransLink

TransLink is warning of numerous challenges throughout Metro Vancouver, Burnaby particularly.

SkyTrain is currently delivering service on all three lines, but service is operating slower than normal due to SkyTrain attendants operating the trains manually.

There are bus delays and cancellations due to poor road conditions, particularly in Burnaby, Port Coquitlam, North Shore and New Westminster.

HandyDART is currently running essential service only.
