The Burnaby school board recognized the top 2024 grad from each of its eight high schools last week.
The Governor General’s Academic Medal, which counts former Canadian Prime Ministers among its past recipients, is awarded to the grad with the highest average mark for all of their grade 11 and 12 courses.
École Alpha Secondary School’s 2023/24 Governor General’s Academic Medal winner was Isabelle Trenton, who is now studying sciences and French at UBC.
Burnaby Central Secondary School’s 2023/24 Governor General’s Academic Medal winner was Charlotte Johannes, who is now studying criminology and psychology at SFU.
Burnaby Mountain Secondary School’s 2023/24 Governor General’s Academic Medal winner was Jeremy Tam, who is now studying computer science at the University of Toronto.
Burnaby North Secondary School’s 2023/24 Governor General’s Academic Medal winner was Charis Chang, who is now studying engineering at Queens University.
Burnaby South Secondary School’s 2023/24 Governor General’s Academic Medal winner was Yi Zhong, now studying physical and mathematical sciences at the University of Toronto.
Byrne Creek Community School’s 2023/24 Governor General’s Academic Medal winner was Aryn Zhang, who is now studying sciences at UBC.
Cariboo Hill Secondary School’s 2023/24 Governor General’s Academic Medal winner was Ervin Santiago, who is now studying computer science technology at BCIT.
And École Moscrop Secondary School’s 2023/24 Governor General’s Academic Medal winner was Tanya Liu, who is now at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland studying molecular and cellular biology as well as applied mathematics and statistics.
The medals were announced at a school board meeting on Oct. 29, and each grad was celebrated in a speech from their school principal outlining their achievements.
