Did you ever find yourself colouring in the margins of your notebooks or on the classroom furniture growing up?
Well, one pop-up art installation in Burnaby encourages children and adults alike to do just that.
From Aug. 15 to Sept. 5, visitors to the Metrotown mall are encouraged to grab some markers and get doodling on the vinyl walls, flooring and furniture of a 950-square-foot pop-up classroom.
The brainchild of Vancouver-based artist Tierney Milne, the back-to-school-themed interactive exhibit — dubbed the "Doodle Classroom" — is meant to help kids get hyped up to be creative when they head back to the classroom.
"So many kids fall in love with art while at school," said Milne. "Art is how many children learn to express themselves. The power of art is exceptional."
Milne says that she feels inspired to see kids come up with creative solutions for abstract designs, which she believes was the intention.
For every visitor to the Burnaby pop-up and its sister site at the Guildford Town Centre in Surrey, $5 will be donated to the Breakfast Club of Canada, which provides healthy breakfasts for school-aged children.
Just under two weeks, the classroom at Metrotown has seen close to 7900 visitors and raised $10,000 for the Breakfast Club of Canada, according to Amanda Chung, the Marketing manager at Metrotown.
