More students will have access to housing at Simon Fraser University (SFU) after the opening of the Courtyard Residence.
The Burnaby post-secondary says the residence has 369 student rooms and will also be the new home for "The Simon," which provides short-term accommodations for campus visitors.
"Affordable on-campus housing is a win-win for everyone because it decreases pressure on the rental housing market while enriching the university experience of our students," SFU president Joy Johnson said in a news release.
"We are excited to welcome nearly 400 additional students to Burnaby campus with the completion of this building — and we look forward to continuing our expansion of campus housing in the years to come."
The development includes views of Burnaby Mountain, outdoor areas, a centrally-located exterior courtyard, swings, ping-pong tables and open-air gathering spaces.
The building also features modern rooms, private shared washrooms, a house lounge and kitchen, 24/7 front desk support, laundry room and multi-functional spaces.
The Courtyard Residence mainly features single occupancy rooms that are intended for first-year students.
With the latest opening, there are now more than 2,450 student beds on the Burnaby campus.
"This is an exciting time for SFU students with more on-campus student housing now open," Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Katrina Chen added.
"Post-secondary students need access to affordable housing to pursue their studies and lay the foundation for their future, helping to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow, as they are the future of our province."
