One of the Burnaby Village Museum's beloved attractions is being recognized on the national stage.
Canada Post has released new stamps to celebrate the wonder and playfulness of vintage carousels in Canada, which includes the C.W. Parker Carousel No. 119 from the local site.
"It's great to see the C.W. Parker carousel and Burnaby Village Museum included in this set of stamps commemorating carousels around Canada, especially as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Burnaby Village Museum this summer," museum spokesperson Deborah Tuyttens told the NOW.
"The C.W. Parker carousel is an iconic part of Burnaby Village Museum. It was decommissioned by the PNE in 1989, and it took a community-wide effort to form the Friends of the Carousel group, which raised money to purchase and restore the 1912 carousel, and then move it to the Burnaby Village Museum."
Canada Post says the featured carousels are each known for their elaborately carved and painted animals.
The stamps also showcase the craftsmanship and mechanical ingenuity that were impressive for their era.
The four other carousels include (in alphabetical order):
- Bowness Carousel - Heritage Park Historical Village, Calgary, Alta.
- Lakeside Park Carousel - Lakeside Park, St. Catherines, Ont.
- Le Galopant - La Ronde, Montreal, Que.
- Roseneath Carousel - Roseneath Fairgrounds, Roseneaths, Ont.
The stamps were designed by Paprika and feature illustrations by René Milot, and each depict one animal from each of the feature carousels and the location indicated at the bottom.
