New COVID-19 infections in Burnaby fall 31% during latest reporting period

For the second time this week, there is encouraging news in Burnaby's COVID-19 battle.

According to the latest Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Local Health Area of Case Residence data released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), Burnaby saw 82 cases recorded from Oct. 24 to 30. 

There were 119 cases from Oct. 17 to 23, 2021. 

The latest numbers are a 31 per cent drop compared to the previous reporting period. 

Three care facilities in Burnaby remain under COVID-19 outbreak declaration while the deadly outbreak at the Willingdon Care Centre has been declared over as of yesterday (Nov. 3). 

Fraser Health said 15 lives were lost and 106 cases involving 81 residents and 25 staff were recorded during the outbreak which was declared on Sept. 27, 2021. 

Other facilities under outbreaks in Burnaby are: 

  • The Swedish Assisted Living Residence: Outbreak declared on Oct. 19, 2021
    • Seven confirmed cases involving five staff and two residents
  • Rideau Retirement Residence: Outbreak declared on Oct. 27, 2021
    • Four confirmed cases involving four residents
  • Cascade Gardens Seniors Community: Outbreak declared on Oct. 29, 2021
    • One resident with a confirmed case

In other Burnaby data, its four quadrants all say decreases in positivity and case rates from Oct. 22 to 28, 2021. 

Case rates are new cases per 100,000 people by local health area and community health service area.

  • Vaccination coverage (first dose) of those 12 years of age and older: 94%
  • Vaccination coverage (second dose) of those 12 years of age and older: 90%

BURNABY SOUTHWEST

  • Case rate: 3
  • Positivity rate: 1%
  • Vaccination coverage (first dose) of those 12 years of age and older: 92%
  • Vaccination coverage (second dose) of those 12 years of age and older: 88%

BURNABY SOUTHEAST

  • Case rate: 7 
  • Positivity rate: 3% 
  • Vaccination coverage (first dose) of those 12 years of age and older: 91%
  • Vaccination coverage (second dose) of those 12 years of age and older: 87%
