COVID-19 outbreak declared at George Derby Centre
Another COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at a Burnaby long-term care facility.
According to the Fraser Health Authority, an outbreak was put in place at George Derby Centre on Monday (April 11).
Fraser Health says a COVID-19 outbreak may be declared at a long-term care or assisted living site at the direction of the medical health officer or their official designate.
"Based on the consideration of multiple risk factors, including vaccination coverage rate among residents, the severity of illness amongst cases and the rate of increase in cases, a unit/wing/floor/facility may be placed on outbreak under the direction of the medical health officer, working with the facility leadership and health authority long-term care program, and infection, prevention and control teams," the authority says on its website.
George Derby Centre has been subject to multiple outbreaks since the start of the pandemic, with the last being declared on Jan. 4 and ending on Feb. 17.
A total of three lives were lost among 52 recorded cases.
In November 2020, the centre endured another tragic outbreak with 36 lives lost among 109 confirmed infections.
Outbreak at Burnaby Hospital involves medicine unit, Fraser Health says
An ongoing COVID-19 outbreak at Burnaby Hospital was declared after evidence of transmission in a medicine unit, according to Fraser Health.
The outbreak was declared on April 2, 2022.
Fraser Health says a COVID-19 outbreak is declared at an acute care site when at least one staff or patient/resident has been diagnosed with the virus and an investigation indicates that transmission most likely happened in the facility from another patient/resident, visitor or staff.
When asked for a case count, a Fraser Health spokesperson told the NOW the number of cases involving acute care settings is no longer being provided.
"Given the nature of the circulating Omicron variant, we do not share case counts as they no longer provide an accurate reflection of how COVID-19 is impacting patients, staff, and medical staff in acute care settings," an emailed statement said.
"We continue to follow all necessary protocols to contain COVID-19 outbreaks and protect patients, staff and medical staff, including the BC Centre for Disease Control’s outbreak management protocol for acute care settings."
