Burnaby is getting four new dedicated pickleball courts at Squint Lake Park.

Burnaby is getting its first dedicated pickleball courts after the city approved a contract for an estimated $1.17 million.

Pickleball courts in Burnaby currently are shared with the city’s tennis courts, though pickleball uses differently sized nets and court sizes.

The project at Squint Lake Park (1541 Greystone Dr.) will include building four new pickleball courts, and also see the installation of new acrylic surfacing on the existing three tennis courts at the park.

The contract was awarded to GPM Civil Contracting Inc.

Other municipalities in Metro Vancouver are also building pickleball courts in their parks.

Currently, Surrey has 20 dedicated courts with eight more under construction. Delta has 19 dedicated courts, and Richmond has nine. The North Shore is also reallocating certain tennis courts and dedicating them for pickleball use.

The Squint Lake courts and some adjacent parking spaces will be closed for construction until late fall 2022.
