A Burnaby park washroom destroyed by fire in October is one step closer to being replaced by a more accessible, universal and vandal-proof facility.

A fire in the early morning hours of Oct. 18 did "extensive damage" to the washrooms at Squint Lake Park, according to the City of Burnaby.

After assessing the building, the city decided on a full replacement.

The new facility will be built within the same footprint and "designed to ensure accessibility, safety and inclusivity through universal design principles," according to bid documents posted online this week.

The city said the new building should be built to be "durable and fire-resistant" with "vandal-resistant and low-maintenance materials to enhance longevity and security."

To support year-round use, including the winter months, the design will also have to be energy efficient.

The building will include universal washrooms, storage space for maintenance and operational needs and a mechanical room, according to the bid documents.

The new facility could also include a concession space "subject to available space and feasibility," documents said.

A sump pump currently located at the entrance to the parking lot presents accessibility challenges, and the rebuild will include relocating the pump closer to the building.

A tentative schedule included in the bid documents estimates construction will begin in August and be complete by November.
