The mural will prevent illegal graffiti and promote positive arts 'in an area that has long been considered an eyesore,' according to city staff.

Artist Ela Maftei has been granted $7,000 for a mural on the Kensington overpass in Burnaby.

A new mural of terrariums full of Venus fly traps, ferns and succulents will be coming to Burnaby’s Kensington overpass.

City council approved $7,000 at a council meeting this week for a mural by local artist Ela Maftei in order to beautify community infrastructure.

Staff said the mural grant program, established in 2008, has added vibrancy and creativity to neighbourhoods and deterred illegal graffiti vandalism, according to a report to council.

Staff regularly respond to graffiti reports in the area, which is visible from Lougheed Highway and the walking path of the Central Valley Greenway, said the report.

“This mural will prevent illegal graffiti while promoting positive and legal arts in an area that has long been considered an eyesore due to the abundance of illegal and non-artistic graffiti,” said the report.

Maftei, a Burnaby artist and Romanian immigrant, has painted a number of murals throughout the Lower Mainland and Burnaby.

Her work combines landscapes and wildlife painting with street art.
