Peter Julian is set to add a 10th critic's role to his political résumé.
The New Westminster–Burnaby MP was named the federal NDP's new health critic following a recent cabinet shuffle by leader and Burnaby South MP Jagmeet Singh.
Julian will also remain as the orange party's house leader, according to a news release, as well as its deputy critic for finance.
The veteran politician for the region since 2004 said he's looking forward to taking on his new responsibility.
"The New Democrats have tirelessly advocated for universal Pharmacare and Dental Care," Julian explained.
"In 2021, I tabled Bill C-213 - An Act to enact the Canada Pharmacare Act, but the Liberals and Conservatives voted it down."
“The NDP and I will continue to work hard to force the Liberal government to do more for Canadians," Julian added.
"We need to ensure seniors, people with disabilities and low income Canadians are able to have dental care and will be able to take the medications that their doctors prescribe."
Julian said the NDP have already had some success in pushing Ottawa on health matters.
This includes delivering free coverage of contraception, savings of up to $200 a year, and diabetes medications, more than $1,500 annually, for those that need them.
Julian's career with the federal NDP has now encompassed a total of 10 critic roles, including (in no particular order):
- Health (present)
- Finance
- Energy
- Industry
- Transportation
- Persons with disabilities
- International trade
- Western fisheries
- Treasury board
- 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games
