The Burnaby NOW took home a pair of accolades from Thursday night's Canadian Community Newspaper Awards ceremony in Toronto.
NOW reporter Christina Myers received a silver in the history writing category for her feature on historic homes and buildings in the Deer Lake area, titled 'Homes shrouded in history and mystery.'
The story, which featured long-time city volunteer Maria Peradenic, took a closer look at some of the supposed hauntings in the buildings and the real-life stories behind them.
The NOW was also awarded a silver in the community service category, for the 2011 Burnaby Christmas Bureau campaign. The NOW has been providing support for the annual bureau project for more than a decade, led by publisher Brad Alden. The extensive campaign coverage was coordinated and written by Myers, with photos taken by photographers Larry Wright and Jason Lang; NOW salesperson Cynthia Hendrix, who also sits on the board of the bureau, provided advertising liaison and organization for the project.
The project helps thousands of individuals around the city by providing toys and food for low-income families at Christmas time.
Earlier this month, Myers - who has been with the NOW since 2003 -won a silver award at the B.C. Yukon Community Newspaper Awards in business writing for an article in the NOW's sister paper, the Royal City Record.
