Occupants of Burnaby house slumber as 'spectacular' fire breaks out in their carport

Neighbours called the fire department to report flames shooting from a carport in the 5600 block of Woodsworth Street at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday night. Firefighters found the occupants of the house fast asleep.

Residents of a Burnaby house are lucky a fire in their carport Thursday night was “spectacular” enough get their neighbours’ attention and bring more than 40 firefighters to the scene.

Fire crews were called to the home, in the 5600 block of Woodsworth Street near Douglas Road, just before 9:30 p.m. for reports of a building fire, according to assistant fire Chief Derek Masaro.

At the scene, he said firefighters found the carport “fully involved” and the building next door just starting to catch fire.

“It was quite spectacular to see; there was quite a bit of flames,” Masaro said.

A second alarm was called, bringing more than 40 firefighters to the scene.

The blaze was contained within half an hour.

When crews conducted a search of the house with the burning garage, they found two occupants fast asleep, according to Masaro.

“We assisted them out,” he said. “Luckily the fire didn’t get into the house itself. Most of the damage was to the carport and the neighbouring house.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
