One dead after crash, vehicle fire in Burnaby

Police continue to investigate the collision.

One person is dead after a crash and vehicle fire in Burnaby early this morning (June 28). 

Mounties say frontline officers responded to a report of a vehicle fire after a collision on Boundary Road near Canada Way around 12:45 a.m.

The driver of a black Jeep Cherokee was pronounced dead at the scene after allegedly hitting a tree and sliding to the centre median before catching fire. 

The vehicle was travelling northbound on Boundary Road before the collision.

Burnaby RCMP's criminal collision team has since taken lead on the investigation. 

"We would like to thank the multiple witnesses who attempted to save the driver and contacted emergency services," spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins said in a news release. 

"We understand that this type of event can be traumatic, however the actions of the witnesses are nothing short of heroic."

Boundary Road between Canada Way and 22nd Avenue remains closed, as of this publication, while police continue to investigate.
