Booooooooooo! That’s my response to the City of Burnaby cutting off the time you can park up on Burnaby Mountain.
“Effective immediately, the main parking lot on Burnaby Mountain will be closed every night at 10 p.m.,” reads a tweet by the city. “This closing time is consistent with other parks in the city.”
OK, sure, but you just ruined a beloved spot in Burnaby for teens and others to make out.
Let me back up a bit.
The first place I ever “made out” (does anyone still use this phrase besides me?) with a girl was in this parking lot after dark with just the glow of the city lights to guide us.
I was 16 (yes, I was late to the kissing thing) and this was the most popular place to park and kiss. I even remember seeing another classmate parked up there next to us. There were other cars and all of them had fogged-up windows.
It really was a magical spot to do this. You park facing the incredible view and then nervously chat until you get up the courage to lean over and kiss. Then you take a break and stare out at the magnificent view.
Yes, I’m 52 and perhaps young people don’t do this anymore. I guess I’m just pining a little for my youth.
I am puzzled at what prompted the decision. The Horizons restaurant is now gone, but I’m assuming that at some point the city will convince another place to open up. I doubt they’ll want to have to shut things down at 10 p.m. due to a parking restrictions.
