Photos: Burnaby kids head back to school for first full day

Nearly 27,000 students were welcomed at Burnaby schools this week.

The Burnaby school district's 41 elementary and eight secondary schools welcomed students back for another year this week.

The Burnaby NOW was at Confederation Park Elementary School in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood Wednesday morning to capture some back-to-school moments on the first full day of school.

"Seeing our students return to school brings so much joy and excitement – one of my favourite days," said principal Reg LaPlante.

The district expects to welcome about 26,798 regular kindergarten-to-Grade 12 students and 898 international students this year, according to enrolment estimates included in a preliminary budget presentation in April.

That number will be updated toward the end of October, once school officials determine how many kids actually showed up at local schools this month, according to the school district.
