Photos: Scorching Burnaby sun couldn't keep kids from trying new sports

Multiple Burnaby sports organizations hosted a "girls' try-it day" last Sunday, July 7.

More than 50 young girls didn't let the higher temperatures in Burnaby last weekend deter them from trying several new outdoor sports.

A trio of local organizations teamed up to host a "girls' try-it day" at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West (3677 Kensington Ave.), introducing them to the likes of field lacrosse, rugby and tennis.

The event's goal was to hopefully encourage the young aspiring athletes to take up a stick, ball or racket.

Spokesperson Jacquie Breadon said, more importantly, it was about having fun with the community.

"It was a great day despite the scorching weather," she told the NOW. "We had 53 girls turn out, which is amazing."

The three-hour session last Sunday, July 7, was reduced to two as a result of the hot summer sun, which spiked to nearly 35°C.

Organizers originally scheduled the try-it day for mid-June, but was postponed by rain.

The event was put together by the Burnaby Field Lacrosse Club, Burnaby Lake Rugby Club and Burnaby Tennis Club.
