Two more Burnaby schools are getting some much needed extra space thanks to prefabricated additions announced by the province this week.
On Wednesday, the province said it was investing $133.5 million for prefabricated additions in 10 school districts, including Burnaby.
Alpha Secondary School in North Burnaby will get $12 million for a 12-classroom addition, representing 300 new seats, while Nelson Elementary School in South Burnaby will get $4 million for four new classrooms and 100 more seats, according to the school district.
"Burnaby is one of B.C.'s fast-growing cities – especially in the Brentwood and Metrotown neighbourhoods," school board chair Bill Brassington said in a district news release Thursday. "These additions at Alpha Secondary and Nelson Elementary will help us to meet enrolment demand and give students the classroom learning environments and space they need to thrive."
The prefabricated additions are part of the province's plan to expand schools quickly to accommodate rapid enrolment growth.
Alpha is located in the school district's Brentwood North zone, where enrolment is expected to jump more than 19 per cent over the next ten years, while Nelson is in the Kingsway South zone, where enrolment is expected to grow by 17.5 per cent within the same timeframe, according to the district.
Both schools surpassed their operating capacity in 2022, the district said.
