An ad hoc of group of East Vancouver residents is planning a march against Kinder Morgan's pipeline expansion plan this weekend.
Organizer Gene Logan said the group wants to stop the company's proposal and has concerns about increasing tanker traffic and the associated risk of oil spills.
"This isn't about blind opposition to progress, it's about opposition to blind progress," Logan said. "Just because some people might make a whole bunch of money on this doesn't mean it's a good idea."
Kinder Morgan plans on twinning the Trans Mountain pipeline, which runs 300,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta to the West Coast. The expanded system would transport 890,000 barrels per day, roughly triple today's capacity, pending National Energy Board approval.
According to the company's estimates, the number of tankers in the Burrard Inlet could increase from roughly three or four per month to 34, which translates to 408 a year.
Logan wants the march to draw more attention to Kinder Morgan's plan.
"So far, it's all been about Enbridge," he said, referring to the Northern Gateway pipeline proposal. "Kinder Morgan seems to be the battle that's going to be the tougher one."
The march is set for Sunday, Feb. 24, at Kensington Avenue and Hastings Street at 1 p.m. The group plans to march to the foot of Bayview Drive to the Kinder Morgan gates.
