Mayor Mike Hurley says the City of Burnaby is "ready to stand up against bullies" in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25 per cent tariff threats.
Hurley directed city staff — and encouraged all Burnabarians — to take a "buy local and buy Canadian" approach at a special council meeting Tuesday, Feb. 4.
He asked staff to report back on potential ways to change the city’s procurement policies and practices to support local businesses.
“Municipalities have a responsibility to support Canadian businesses and workers by ensuring procurement practices prioritize local economic development where permitted under trade agreements,” Hurley said in the motion he presented to council.
And he encouraged residents to follow suit.
“During tough times, our community has always come together to support each other — and this is no exception,” said Hurley in a news release.
“I encourage all Burnaby residents to adopt a ‘Buy Local and Buy Canadian’ approach, which will help support local workers and businesses, and help to make our community even more resilient.”
Staff will report back to council with an outline of potential changes “as soon as practicable.”
The City of Burnaby is ready to stand up against bullies. We’ll be reviewing our procurement policies and making changes to ensure we’re buying local and buying Canadian wherever we can. You too can help support our economy by buying local. Learn more: https://t.co/cSZEoXmoEl
