Burnaby's 44-year-old Cameron Library and Recreation Centre is nearing the end of its days, and the city is throwing a farewell party.
The rec complex is set to be demolished this fall to be redeveloped into a new community centre four times its size.
The event will host community exhibits, food trucks, free activities and fitness demonstrations Saturday, Aug. 17 starting at 10 a.m.
Mayor Mike Hurley will give remarks at 11 a.m. and the fitness demos will begin at 11:30 a.m.
The Cameron complex will close the next day on Sunday, Aug. 18 and re-open at the temporary Lougheed mall location, where the library has already made its home the past three months, on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Burnaby staff say the existing facility is “unable to adequately serve the growing needs of the community,” with issues including code deficiencies, increased maintenance costs, and its small size.
The new $267-million rec complex, featuring two new pools, is expected to open to the public in 2028.
