Emergency crews respond to a fatal pedestrian-involved collision on Highway 1 in Burnaby Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to Highway 1 in Burnaby Wednesday morning for the second deadly pedestrian-involved crash in the area this year.

First responders rushed to the westbound lanes of the highway by the Willingdon Overpass at about 8:10 a.m., according to assistant fire Chief Gavin Summers.

A pedestrian had been struck and pinned beneath a car, he said, and efforts to revive them were unsuccessful.

BC Highway Patrol said the pedestrian had tried to cross the highway.

“The place where this happened, it’s not legal for pedestrians to cross,” spokesperson Cpl. Mike Halskov told the NOW.

The highway patrol investigation is in its early stages, he said, and motorists can expect “significant delays” throughout the morning.

The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene, according to Halskov, but a vehicle that rear-ended that car took off, and investigators are hoping to speak to the second driver or anyone who might have dashcam footage of the second vehicle.

“With the volume of traffic around that portion of the highway at that time in the morning, I imagine there’s more than one person that’s got dashcam footage,” Halskov said.

This is the second fatal pedestrian-involved collision on that stretch of the highway this year.

On Jan. 29, a man in his 60s was hit when he tried to cross the six lanes of high-speed traffic.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition and died several days later, according to Halskov.

There have been homeless encampments in the area, and that man had had no fixed address, according to the highway patrol.

But Halskov said the latest victim was not believed to be connected to the homeless camps.

Anyone with information or dashcam video related to the latest crash is asked to call BC Highway Patrol in Burnaby at 604-526-9744.

This story has been changed. The original said Wednesday's crash had happened by the Grandview HOV exit, but Summers told the NOW it had, in fact, occurred at the Willingdon Avenue overpass.
