Burnaby council approved the city's first payment to the Burnaby Seniors Games organizing committee at Monday night's meeting.
A payment of $25,000 was approved, as part of the city's commitment to provide up to $55,000 in funding for the games and an additional $50,000 in in-kind support.
Burnaby is hosting the 2012 B.C. Seniors Games from Aug. 21 to 25 next summer.
Darlene Gering, former president and CEO of the Burnaby Board of Trade, is president of the organizing committee for Burnaby's Games.
The committee's board has been involved in orientation sessions to learn about its areas of responsibility for the games, according to a report from the city's department of parks, recreation and cultural services.
In August, several members attended the B.C. Seniors Games in Castlegar to make connections and to observe how the games are run.
Staff will report back to council when the remaining $30,000 in funding is requested by the committee, the parks department's report stated.
