SFU's affordable housing project has been honoured with the 2024 GAGBC inspiring home award.

Simon Fraser University's (SFU) affordable housing project has been awarded the Canada Green Building Council's 2024 Inspiring Home Award.

The annual awards celebrate innovative projects, teams and individuals that are making positive contributions to Canada's green building sector.

The award consist of two categories: Green Building and Green Building Leadership.

“The CAGBC Awards are a showcase of the market’s commitment to, green building,” CAGBC president and CEO Thomas Mueller said in a news release

“This year’s winners represent the best of Canada’s sustainability leaders and the most innovative green and low-carbon projects in the country. Together they prove that green buildings are better buildings with reduced carbon emissions, enhanced resiliency and long-term business value.”

The university says the project was built with a high level of thermal efficiency and design features that support passive heating and cooling which helps minimize energy use.

The buildings include 90 rental units, including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, as well as three accessible units.

The spaces are for SFU students with a spouse, common-law partner and/or children.

“SFU is committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all SFU students, and that means building appropriate accommodations for students at every stage of their life journey,” SFU president Joy Johnson said in a 2022 statement

The wood-framed buildings are also positioned around a central courtyard and stand-alone community space with study rooms, secure bike storage and a bike workshop space.
