In four months, police and SFU’s traffic safety team caught nine people on Burnaby Mountain driving without licences, one SFU student who decided to do a burnout in full view of the officers and hundreds more violating other traffic laws.
Between October and February, Burnaby RCMP and SFU teamed up for 20 joint enforcements to crack down on unsafe driving on the mountain.
“The winter months are known as the most hazardous in the area due to weather conditions,” stated an RCMP news release. “Both agencies noted the increasing road safety issues at SFU and the surrounding area. These issues included intersection safety, speeding, drivers disobeying traffic signs and pedestrian safety.”
Police handed out a total of 511 tickets and four driving bans during the four-month initiative.
What were the tickets for?
- 129 prohibited U-turns
- 114 drivers failing to stop at stop signs
- 99 speeders
- 50 drivers disobeying traffic control devices
- 9 drivers without licences
- 1 stunting incident
- 109 other driving violations
The stunting incident involved a male SFU student rolling through a stop sign at Gaglardi Way and University Drive and then burning-out and fishtailing in the middle of the intersection, according to Burnaby RCMP.
The student was issued a ticket for stunting and several other tickets for vehicle defects.
“While a lot of tickets were issued, our first goal is always to educate the public and to keep our roads safe,” Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj said in the release. “Based on the volume of unsafe driving observed, expect to see this type of initiative and partnership to continue in the future.”
