Midfielder Chelsea Crocq (#18) netted SFU's only goal in a 1-0 victory against MSU on Aug. 26, 2022.

1-0.

The Simon Fraser University (SFU) women's soccer squad's new season is off and running, and the players are probably feeling very good about themselves after starting off with a win on their own pitch.

The red and white shut out Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU) 1-0 on Friday (Aug. 26) in the home opener on Terry Fox Field at SFU Stadium.

The match was the 2022 NCAA Div. II opener for both squads. SFU plays in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC).

A goal from midfielder Chelsea Crocq was all they would need to defeat the Roadrunners, which was also the first shutout of the young season.

Crocq's first university goal came in the 43rd minute from the top of the six-yard box after a pass from forward Kiara Buono, who beat two defenders before pushing the ball to the Calgary product.

"I was just hoping for the ball to get to me," Crocq said in a post-game news release.

"Kiara [Buono] battled amazingly, she won the ball and poked it through and I just had to finish it."

With leading her team to the win with her first collegiate goal, Crocq was also named the GNAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.

MSU Denver had its best chance shortly after the start of the second half, with Kate Giordano's shot hitting the top of the crossbar before heading out of play in the 49th minute.

SFU goalkeeper Sarah Loewen, a redshirt freshman, stopped the four shots she faced in her first NCAA game.

With leading her team to the win with her first collegiate goal, Crocq was named the GNAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
