Burnaby firefighters are responding to a Monday afternoon fire in the Big Bend area of South Burnaby.

According to numerous Tweets on the Twitter social media site, the fire is near the corner of Byrne Road and Marine Way. According to pictures posted by several news helicopters, the fire appears to be in a warehouse.

Just south of that intersection is the Riverway Golf Course, where David O'Connor, the Burnaby parks and recreation assistant director of golf operations, has his office.

"There's a lot of black smoke and (it) smells like a lot of rubber burning," said O'Connor.

He added that traffic in the area has become snarled, and the best way for golfers needing to access the course is to go south on Boundary Road, past Marine Way and wind through the industrial area before getting to Byrne Road.

While the Burnaby NOW has calls to both the Burnaby RCMP and the Burnaby Fire Department looking for details about the fire, we are asking our readers to send us pictures of the fire, by email to [email protected]. Also, if you are in the area, please call reporter Alfie Lau at 604-444-3059.
