Burnaby's St. Thomas More Collegiate is hosting a memorial for the late Charles Slattery in April.
Slattery, who was STM's principal from 1972 to 1978, passed away on Feb. 27 in a Newfoundland nursing home.
Those wishing to celebrate his life can RSVP to [email protected]. The memorial is Thursday, April 25 at 6 p.m. in the band room at STM, 7450 12th Ave. The school is also encouraging people to share their memories of "Slats" on the STM Facebook page.
Contest winner
Burnaby North Secondary student Jennifer Lam won first place in ICBC's Your Ad Here contest. Students across B.C. were asked to submit poster designs with safe driving messages, and Lam, a Grade 12 student, won first in the impaired driving category.
Lam's message was: "Don't drink and drive. You can't rebuild a life." ICBC received more than 225 entries and chose 12 winners. First place prize winners received a MacBook Pro, and the winning ads will be featured in an ICBC's youth campaign next year.
Class of '63
Attention Burnaby North students who graduated in
1963. Former students are organizing a 50th anniversary reunion on Saturday, Oct.
20 at the Executive Plaza Hotel, at 405 North Road in Coquitlam.
"We're pretty excited about this," said Lucille Wright, one of five former students organizing the reunion. "It's basically going to be hot and cold hor d'oeuvres, no host bar." There may also be a DJ, and there will be a mini-grad booklet for attendees, she added.

Do It Green
The Burnaby Youth Sustainability Network is hosting its annual "Do it Green" conference on Friday, April 19.
All Burnaby high school students are welcome to attend the day of workshops, held at Burnaby North Secondary.
In the morning, there will be a Skype call with Severn Cullis-Suzuki, daughter of well-known environmental activist David Suzuki.
In the afternoon, there a performance by Ta'Kaiya Blaney, a 12-year-old girl from the Sliammon First Nation. Ta'Kaiya has been making a name for herself with her song Shallow Waters and her message about protecting the environment for future generations.

Elks donation
Children at Burnaby's Stride Avenue Community School can go to class with fuller tummies, thanks to a financial boost to the breakfast and lunch program from the South Burnaby Elks No. 497 and Royal Purple No. 260. The groups donated $1,000 to Stride Avenue Community School, before Christmas last year.
The Elks and Royal Purple Lodges are fraternal and charitable organizations that have been operating in Burnaby for more than 50 years.
