A fire in Metrotown early last Friday morning gutted vehicles and scorched a lowrise apartment building.

A suspicious fire that gutted numerous vehicles and scorched a Burnaby apartment building last week has prompted an arson investigation.

Police were called to 4325 Maywood St. at about 5 a.m. Friday (Aug. 28) for reports of a suspicious blaze, according to a Burnaby RCMP news release.

The fire started at the back of the lowrise apartment building and quickly spread to a parking structure, eventually causing extensive damage to 10 vehicles and the back side of the building, police said.

Investigators are now asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who has dashcam footage of the area between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Friday to contact Burnaby RCMP.

“The risk of personal injury in these instances can be extremely high. Luckily nobody was injured in this incident,” Cpl. Mike Kalanj. “If you saw anything or have any information that can help further our investigation, please contact the Burnaby RCMP.”

Kalanj said arson investigators are aware of a car fire in the same general area on Wednesday (Sept. 2) but said there is no evidence at this time linking the two incidents.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.
