Tamara Vrooman will become Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) 12th chancellor, starting June 13.
The university announced Friday that she will replace current chancellor Anne Giardini, who has held the role since 2014.
“It’s an incredible honour and privilege to be appointed SFU’s chancellor,” said Vrooman in a statement.
“It is also a particularly interesting moment to take on this role as the university embarks on an exciting period of development in a challenging environment.
“Education will have a significant impact on the well-being and sustainability of our communities as we move forward. I’m excited to be advocating for SFU and the success of students and alumni as they contribute to a strong and sustainable future.”
The role of chancellor is one of two new hats that Vrooman will be donning in the coming weeks, as she steps down as CEO of Vancity – a leadership position she’s held for 13 years, since the start of the financial crisis – to take on the position of CEO and president of Vancouver International Airport (YVR).
She will be replacing YVR’s current CEO, Craig Richmond – who announced his retirement last year – as of July 1.
Vrooman has a strong relationship with the university, and was recognized for her contributions to SFU and the community with an honorary degree in 2016.
Along with Vancity, Vrooman has worked with SFU on several initiatives, including establishing the Vancity Office of Community Engagement at SFU Woodward’s, and supporting the university’s social innovation hub, RADIUS. She is also a sponsor of the annual SFU Public Square Community Summit.
Prior to joining Vancity, Vrooman served as B.C.’s deputy minister of finance, secretary to the Treasury Board and CEO of the Public Sector Employers’ Council. She also served as deputy minister and executive financial officer for the Ministry of Health.
“Simon Fraser University is thrilled to welcome Tamara Vrooman as its next chancellor,” said Andrew Petter, SFU president and vice chancellor in a statement.
“A respected leader and champion for social justice, she brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to community betterment that will help SFU advance its mission as Canada’s Engaged University.”
