Ten people have died and more than 100 cases have been identified by Fraser Health in a COVID-19 outbreak.

A COVID-19 outbreak was declared at Burnaby Hospital on Nov. 9 after evidence of transmission in a medicine unit.

At this time, there are 60 patients and 43 staff associated with the COVID-19 outbreak at the hospital, said Fraser Health, as well as the 10 deaths.

“Our sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones to COVID-19,” said a Fraser Health news release. “We continue to actively address the outbreak at the site, and are testing all patients admitted through the Emergency Department and all surgical patients to minimize the risk of additional transmission.”

The hospital was hit by a fire on Nov. 15 and that impacted some areas of the hospital.

As a precaution, the hospital was not accepting new admissions for several days, but Fraser Health said that with some restoration complete following the fire, the hospital has now resumed regular admissions through the Emergency Department.

“We acknowledge the immense dedication our Burnaby Hospital team has demonstrated over the past few weeks and continue to show each and every day to ensure our patients receive the care they need,” said a news release.
