The Burnaby RCMP announced on July 21 that its prolific offender suppression team has busted an elaborate theft ring that saw 10 people arrested, 103 charges and more than $40,000 in electronic devices seized.
The months-long multi-jurisdictional operation began in late 2010 when Burnaby RCMP investigators identified a crime trend that was occurring in Burnaby and throughout the Lower Mainland.
According to Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk, the modus operandi consisted of a group of one to four people who would enter a store and head for the display cases, where they would steal expensive electronics such as cellphones and PlayStations.
When Burnaby RCMP investigators talked to officers in neighbouring cities, they were able to link 23 separate theft investigation together.
During the last four months, police officers gathered enough evidence to identify and arrest 10 people - who are facing a total of 103 charges - who police believe are involved in this heft ring.
